NOVICE

Coach: Elizabeth Harrison, with assistance from guest coaches TBA.

The Novice Rowing Program is designed for adults with no rowing experience who want to learn to row in sweep boats. In sweep rowing, each rowers holds one oar and rowers will either row in boats with 8 rowers (plus a coxswain to steer) or 4 rowers (plus a coxswain). The first part of the program focuses is to develop the basics of rowing technique, boat-handling skills and water safety. The latter part of the program focuses on building and improving the fundamental aspects of the rowing stroke, as well as increasing fitness and strength. Drills will be utilized to improve timing, balance and teamwork.

A UVRF swim test is required for participation. Information on the swim test is available here.

All programs based at the Kendal waterfront in Hanover, NH. Some sessions will be held in the Dartmouth indoor rowing tanks.

*Note: UVRF membership fee is waived for first-time novice program participants. You will need to become a full member if you want to continue in other UVRF programs.

CLUB ROWING

Coach: Elizabeth Harrison, with assistance from guest coaches TBA.

UVRF's CLUB ROWING PROGRAM is a step up from our Novice program and open to adult rowers with at least one or two sessions of UVRF's novice rowing experience, or who have prior experience rowing at the club or collegiate level. The Club program is also open to high school students with at least one year of high school rowing experience.

Club Rowing is designed for rowers seeking a sold skills foundation and fitness opportunity in a recreational setting. It also aims to support the development of rowers progressing to either competitive sweep rowing or sculling. This recreational program will focus on building and improving fundamental aspects of the rowing stroke as well as increasing fitness and strength. Drills be aimed at improving concentration, timing, balance, and teamwork, allowing for better power application to the rowing stroke.

Boats and lineups in this co-ed program are dependent on the size of the roster and attendance each morning, and will include eights and fours. Rowers may occasionally (based on attendance) spend half of a practice in the coach's launch and get switched into the boat. This rotation, commonly employed in sweep rowing programs, will be shared equally among all participants, allowing everyone to go on the water each practice regardless of daily attendance and affording rowers a unique learning opportunity.

NEW THIS YEAR! Club rowers will have the opportunity to participate in a late summer session whose focus will be to train for a 5,000-meter head race held on the storied Charles River in Cambridge, MA, on Saturday, September, September 15.

A UVRF swim test is required if your certificate is not already on file (good for 5 years). UVRF membership is required.

All programs based at the Kendal waterfront in Hanover, NH.
